On Friday, May 14, LMP held its first-ever Education Strategic Planning Retreat. Over 40 key stakeholders met virtually to consider how we envisioned the future of education in our department. Through a series of exercises conducted in virtual break-out rooms, a representative group of LMP physicians, MLTs, MLAs, scientists, leadership, administrative staff, and education partners with UHN Education, Michener Institute, and the University of Toronto collaborated to define a path forward.
Key themes that arose during the day included the shift towards online education strategies, a desire to strengthen relationships to offer interprofessional and multidisciplinary curriculum, and the recognition that education was foundational to addressing our provincial health human resources pressures.
LMP struck an Education Task Force (ETF) early in 2021, and it was this group that sponsored the Retreat, led by Dr. Carmen Avila-Casado (Director, Education) and Ms. Caitlin Gillan (Manager, Education & Practice) and supported by Niveda Illandiraiyan (Education Coordinator).
The ETF’s vision to further strengthen our collaborative structure and our focus on information and resource sharing was highlighted throughout the Retreat, and will serve to advance the LMP Strategic Plan, and also inform a dedicated Strategy for Education. The discussion was rich and productive, and it was recognized that while there were some valuable differing views on specific priorities and scope, and wording and structure of our desired plan, we were well on our way to defining – and auctioning! – a Plan.
Keep an eye out for the launch of the inaugural LMP Education Strategic Plan in the Fall of 2021. If you have any questions or wish to engage in the refining of the final version of the Plan, please reach out to Caitlin at Caitlin.Gillan@uhn.ca.
