Leonardo Pangilinan’s Journey in the new Biochemistry Micro Credential Program

Leonardo Pangilinan, an Advanced Laboratory Technician at LMP, has embarked on a journey to fulfill his aspiration of becoming a Medical Laboratory Technologist through career laddering. Despite juggling two jobs and a family, he seized the opportunity to join the brand new Biochemistry Micro Credential Program at The Michener Institute.

“The program is really well supported by LMP management and it’s sponsored financially by UHN which is a big bonus, I was able to take this on without quitting my job,” says Leonardo.

Leonardo completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering in the Philippines before coming to Canada and completing his Laboratory Assistant course at CDI College. He became a member of Sinai Health’s microbiology team in 2017 before making the shift to UHN’s histocompatibility team in March 2022.

The Biochemistry Micro credential is a new 12-week online course with three onsite sessions held at The Michener Institute, over three weekends. This program equips Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians with essential skills and foundational knowledge necessary for biochemistry lab work, emphasizing the application of critical thinking.

The program provides Medical Laboratory Assistants / Technicians with skills and foundation knowledge  to work in a biochemistry lab and apply critical thinking.

“We learn a lot about quality and safety,” says Leonardo. “We are concentrating on running analyzers, how to get the results we need, how to make sure the machine is running proficiently and properly and how to troubleshoot when needed.”

The next course will run from April 8 to June 28 and registration is currently open.

“I’m incredibly grateful for this program. After 15 years in the field, what I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. There’s immense potential for colleagues, but it requires the right mindset. It’s work and after an 8-hour shift, you’ll need to study, but for the motivated, it’s incredibly rewarding. Believe me, it’s worth the effort.”
