When the Michener Institute joined the UHN family, students and clinicians alike benefited. For the Michener MLT bridging program – a program for internationally educated MLTs to become certified to practice in Canada—a special educational opportunity arose.
The Michener Med Lab Science Program approached LMP to see if we could provide one day observerships in each lab area for students participating in the bridging program to observe operations in a prominent Canadian lab.
Knowing the importance of education and training the next wave of MLTs, LMP agreed.
“For operations, it’s an important educational initiative,” says Christine Cursio, POCT Manager and Co-Education Lead, “We embrace our students from the bridging program, and have for the past three years.”
The observerships are possible through a collaborative effort with Adele Pimentel in the UHN Observership office, the ieMLT office at the Michener, and of course the many staff in the Hematology, Biochemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Pathology and Microbiology labs that embraced and welcomed the student observers.
From March to May 2019, 15 internationally trained MLTs were able to benefit from observing our expertise in the lab.
Thank you LMP for embracing this important educational program!
