Announcing Dr. George Yousef as Program Medical Director, Laboratory Medicine Program

After a competitive, international search, Dr. George Yousef will be joining UHN as Program Medical Director of the Laboratory Medicine Program (LMP). His first day is April 1, 2022.

George joins us from The Hospital for Sick Children where he is Chief of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine and a Senior Associate Scientist. He is also a Professor and Vice-Chair of the department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital.

George is internationally recognized for his research in miRNA and kallikrein and his research laboratory is one of the leading laboratories internationally on cancer biomarkers in renal cell carcinoma and prostate cancers.

He is the editor of the book “Molecular Pathology in Cancer”, the editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Pathology and has published over 280 research papers and review articles and 15 book chapters.

George is the founding member of the International Scientific Committee of Kallikreins and the Vice President of the International Society of Enzymology and has served on numerous academic and governmental advisory committees, including the international kallikrein nomenclature Committee and the International Society of Urologic Pathology Kidney Cancer Classification. He is the chair of the Kidney Cancer Research Network of Canada personalized medicine initiative; and member of the steering committee for prostate and bladder cancer management in Ontario. His research was recognized by prestigious awards from the Royal College of Physicians, Canadian Association of Pathologists, and the United States National Academy of Clinical Chemistry. 

Recognized as one the leading academic laboratory programs in Canada, George will join Ms. Catherine Wang, Vice President, Clinical and Ms. Christine Bruce, Senior Director, to further drive LMP’s World-class precision diagnostics for our patients.

I would like to also take this opportunity to extend my warmest thanks to Dr. Jan Delabie who has been serving as LMP’s interim Program Medical Director since Jan. 2021. Jan has been a steady, calm and thoughtful voice to UHN and LMP’s senior leadership teams during one of healthcare’s most challenging years. His support throughout this time has been tremendously appreciated.
