It is with mixed emotions that I announce that Peter Woo, Manager of the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) teamat UHN Digital, will be retiring in January 2022 after 36 years of exceptional leadership and service to UHN.
Peter started at UHN in 1985, as a technician in the Biochemistry lab. At the time, he was studying at the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology – now known as The Michener Institute. After completing the Medical Laboratory Technologist program, Peter worked at UHN as a Lab Technologist in the Biochemistry and Coagulation labs.
In 1995, Peter was seconded into the UHN Labs project to implement Ultra as the Core Lab Information System. After the successful implementation of this system, Peter made the jump into a more technical role and joined the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) team. Peter was involved in a number of other major Lab system implementations, including Pathology (Cerner CoPath), Microbiology (Soft SCC) and Transfusion Medicine (Wellsky HCLL).
In 2002, Peter took on the role of Manager for the LIS team. Since taking on the Manager role, Peter has been involved in a number of major implementations within LMP, including the Histocompatibility system, the automated track system for Core Lab at the Michener and Eaton Building sites, the Point of Care Glucose monitoring system, and the Telepathology system with our Northern Ontario partner sites. He has also been involved in integration work with various external organizations and systems such as OLIS, Sinai Health/Bridgepoint, Sunnybrook and Lakeridge Health.
Peter’s long history and expertise in both Labs and technology has made him an incredibly knowledgeable and highly respected leader at UHN.
I know that Peter is looking forward to spending more time with family and friends in his retirement. Although his last official day is in January, Peter will be taking much of his banked vacation, starting at the beginning of December. We are working on recruiting for Peter’s role, but in the interim please feel free to contact me.
A Kudoboard has been created to say our goodbyes and share our well wishes. You can add a comment here.
On behalf of UHN Digital and the Lab Medicine Program, I want to extend my sincere gratitude and congratulations to Peter for his outstanding service and incredible contribution to UHN.
Please join me in wishing Peter all the best during this well-deserved transition.
