The medical laboratory professional community came together on April 30 and May 1 for the inaugural Benchmarks Conference, hosted virtually by The Michener Institute. It marked an incredible feat that we populated a conference program with abstracts and content led primarily by MLPs and for MLPs, including keynote lectures and presentations based on submitted abstracts. The Laboratory Medicine Program (LMP) at UHN was represented extremely well in all facets of the conference, including the planning and presentations, and it also had reach across the province and beyond.
Sandra Youkhana, Jyota Lamichhane (& Dr. Rajeevan Selvaratnman), Judy Tran, Suganthini Ilaalagan (Dr. Rohan John, and Dr. Vathany Kulasingam), Wes Morrison, and Jenny Nguyen all presented their work.
Christine Bruce, Senior Director, LMP, UHN gave a well-received keynote address on the Saturday morning, relating the tale of COVID testing ramp-up at Sinai Health in 2020. She was joined by Chris Cursio, Manager Client Services, LMP and a number of colleagues (almost all named Christine) to engage attendees in a Fireside Chat about the broader professional, HR, morale, and logistical considerations of leading the COVID testing charge.
Benchmarks 2021 was an incredible success, and we are looking ahead already to 2022 as we strive to advance our own engagement in academic practice and to serve as the champions and leaders in this space for the broader MLP community. Thank-you to all who contributed through planning, presenting, and engaging in this important event!
