Dr. Carmen Avila-Casado, Renal Pathologist and Director of Education, is passionate about educating clinicians on kidney disease. One innovative way she does this is through GlomCon (The Glomerular Disease Study & Trial Consortium) an online platform.
GlomCon is a virtual teaching space that aims to bring together clinicians, physicians, and researchers who are interested in helping patients with glomerular kidney disease. Identifying an opportunity to expand the audience, in 2018 Dr. Carmen collaborated with Harvard University and a group of young enthusiastic Latin American physicians to create ‘GlomCon Latin America’. This online space consists of monthly online seminars taught in Spanish and daily based news / Wapp scientific alerts about advances in renal diseases received by thousands of people across 16 countries.
Dr. Carmen noticed a significant interest by the Latin community in renal diseases and wanted to offer a space for people with different backgrounds to share insights, cases, and resources. “We were interested in using this platform to expand education to Spanish speaking people. We want these people to have free access to our teachings so that they can continue studying the complex area of renal diseases”, says Dr. Carmen.
As a result of GlomCon Latinamerica’s wide success, The Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SLANH) offered to give the program an academic endorsement (2019), as well as website marketing. People attending the seminars would receive certificates from SLANH indicating that they participate in the GlomCon Latinamerica program online. The GlomCon online platform received an award for the best social media education (2018) program from the American Society of Nephrology.
The online space also allows participants in the seminars to break off into small groups to discuss other cases and different research. “The whole establishment is very interactive for people and the mission is to get excellence in nephrology around the world and spread education”, says Dr. Carmen. Doctors from different institutions across Latin America participate in the teachings of GlomCon Latin America.
“I am extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed with this initiative and to Ali Poyan from Harvard University GlomCon for their unconditional support.” – Dr. Carmen Avila-Casado
