Each year, a handful of medical professionals from around the world come through LMP for one-year subspecialty fellowships offered by staff pathologists and the University of Toronto. Fellows engrain themselves in the program throughout their time here, and under LMP medical staff supervision are involved in taking out patient cases, making diagnoses, and pursuing various research activities.
There are dozens of applicants each year for LMP’s fellowship training and we’re very proud to welcome this year’s successful candidates and offer expert training that can reach patients around the world.
Dr. Kai Duan, Chief Fellow – Liver and GI Pathology
Dr. Kai Duan obtained his medical degree from McGill University. He then left Montreal to complete his residency training in Anatomical Pathology at the University of Toronto, where he also served as Chief Resident. This year, he is pursuing a clinical fellowship in Gastrointestinal & Liver Pathology and will be sharing responsibility as Co-Chief Fellow. His academic interests include medical education, molecular diagnostics, machine learning and computational pathology.
Dr. Chantal Atallah – Genitourinary Pathology
Dr. Chantal Atallah graduated from the MD program at Université de Montréal and completed her residency training in anatomical pathology at McGill University. She is currently completing a genitourinary pathology fellowship at Toronto General Hospital under the supervision of Drs. Sweet, Cheung, Evans and van der Kwast. Prior to her fellowship, she has practiced as a staff pathologist at the Hôpital Régional de Saint-Jérôme and at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec.
Dr. Emily Goebel – Breast Pathology
Emily began her medical training at the University of Toronto as a medical student. She then completed her residency in Anatomical Pathology at Western University before going to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to complete a fellowship in Women’s and Perinatal Pathology. She now returns to Toronto for a 6-month Breast Pathology Fellowship, so her training has come full circle! Following this, Emily has accepted a staff pathologist position at Western University where she will be practicing gynecologic and breast pathology.
Dr. Sara Pakbaz – Endocrine Pathology
Dr. Sara Pakbaz obtained her Medical Degree from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran where she also completed residency training in combined Anatomic & Clinical Pathology program. She is board certified in both AP and CP. Sara practiced as a staff pathologist in Iran before she came to Canada. She attended to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard medical school as a visiting fellow for gynecological and genitourinary pathology. Sara has been a clinical fellow in endocrine pathology under supervision of Dr. Ozgur Mete since 2017. Now, she serves as co-chief fellow while she is doing elective rotations and research activities along with her clinical fellowship.
Dr. Rehab Fatani – Renal Pathology
Rehab obtained her medical degree from Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. She completed her anatomic pathology (AP) residency and King Saud University fellowship and is currently Saudi Board certified in AP. She joined King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC) in the Holy Capital and worked as a pathologist for two years. Her areas of interest are Medical Education, Laboratory Management and Artificial Intelligence. After this renal pathology fellowship at UHN, she will be returning to KAMC as the first renal pathologist in the city and the youngest renal pathologist in the country.
Dr. Ola Abu ar Karsaneh – Lung Pathology
Dr. Ola Abu ar Karsaneh is a mother of two children and Jordanian board certified pathologist. She completed her medical degree at Jordan University of Science and Technology, and subsequently joined the pathology program at King Abdullah University Hospital. She now joins Team LMP as a lung pathology fellow.
Dr. Noor Alsafwani – Neuropathology
Dr. Yukiko Shibahara – Breast Pathology
Yukiko obtained her medical degree from Kobe University, Japan. She then completed her PhD in Pathology at Tohoku University, as well as her postdoctoral fellowship. She is a board certified Pathologist in Japan and is now a breast clinical fellow with UHN/LMP.
Dr. Emilijia Todorovic – Head and Neck Pathology
Emilija graduated from medical school at the University of Begrade, Serbia and then went on to complete her anatomical pathology residency training in Vancouver. She will be doing her head and neck fellowship training this year.
Dr. Kimberly Wood – Dermatopathology
Kimberly did her medical school training at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and her Anatomical pathology residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She worked as a surgical pathologist for a year in Edmonton prior to her dermatopathology fellowship at UHN/LMP with Drs. Danny Ghazarian and Saeed Kamil.
Dr. Klaudia Nowak – GI Pathology
Dr. Sanaz Sanii – Breast and Gynecologic Pathology
Dr. Shara-Gaye Allen – Gynecologic Pathology
Dr. Shara-Gaye Allen is from Kingston, Jamaica. She obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of the West Indies, Mona, where she also completed residency training in Anatomical Pathology. She was subsequently appointed Consultant Pathologist at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St. James. Currently, she is pursuing a fellowship in Gynecologic Pathology, following which she will do a fellowship in Breast Pathology.
Dr. Dongeun Song – EndocrinePathology
Dr. Song graduated Ewha Womans University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea in 2000. She finished both MS and Ph.D. at University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea. After training both resident program and fellowship at ASAN Medical Center, Seoul, she worked as an assistant professor in Ewha Womans University School of Medicine, Mokdong Hospital for three years. From 2011, she moved to ASAN Medical Center, Seoul. She has worked as an associate professor for endocrine pathology and cytopathology. She is a FIAC member, International Academy of Cytopathology. Now, she started as an endocrine fellow under supervision of Dr. Ozgur Mete.
Dr. Elizabeth Kagotho – Pathology
Elizabeth Kagotho obtained her Medical Degree from the University of Nairobi,in Kenya. She completed her residency training in Clinical Pathology at Aga Khan University hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to joining UHN as a Clinical Fellow in Hematopathology she was working as a Clinical Pathologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi.
Dr. Shifaa’ al Qa’qa’ – Renal Pathology
Dr. Shifaa’ al Qa’qa’ is from Jordan and a mother of one son. She has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from Mu’tah University (2011), and completed her residency training in anatomical pathology at Jordan University Hospital (2012-2016). Dr. Shifaa’ al Qa’qa’ also has a degree in higher specialization in pathology from Jordan University (2016), and is a Jordanian board certified pathologist. She has also contributed as a lecturer at Al-Balqa applied university/medical school (2017-2018).
Dr. Mo’ath Alrjoub – Neuropathology
Dr. Mo’ath Alrjoub is from Jordan, and graduated from medical school of Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2011. Dr. Alrjoub completed his residency in pathology at King Abdullah University Hospital in 2016, and then went on to complete his Dermatopathology Fellowship at UHN/LMP last year. Dr. Alrjoub now begins his second fellowship with the program in Neuropathology.
