Each year, a handful of medical professionals from around the world come through LMP for one-year subspecialty fellowships offered by staff pathologists and the University of Toronto. Fellows engrain themselves in the program throughout their time here, and under LMP medical staff supervision are involved in taking out patient cases, making diagnoses, and pursuing various research activities.
There are dozens of applicants each year for LMP’s fellowship training and we’re very proud to welcome this year’s successful candidates and offer expert training that can reach patients around the world.
Vanessa Devilla, Chief Fellow – Gynecological Pathology
Vanessa obtained her Medical Degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines where she also completed residency training in combined Anatomic & Clinical Pathology. She is board certified in both AP and CP by the Philippine Society of Pathologists. She completed a Cytopathology Observership at Johns Hopkins Hospital prior to coming here for Breast Pathology Fellowship last year. This year she is doing a clinical fellowship in gynecologic pathology and serves as co-chief fellow.
Svetlana Carrigan, Chief Fellow – Cytopathology
Svetlana obtained her medical degree from Vladivostok State Medical University, Vladivostok, Russia. She then came to Canada and completed her PhD in Immunology at Dalhousie University, as well as her postdoctoral fellowship. Since then she has completed an AP residency at the University of Toronto, and is now a cytopathology clinical fellow and will be sharing responsibility of the chief fellow.
Sarah Al-Maiman – Gastrointestinal Pathology
Dr. Sarah Al-Maiman is from Saudi Arabia, and finished her medical degree at Qassim University. She then joined the Pathology program in SCHS, and worked as a staff in King Abdulaziz medical city in National Guard, Riyadh .
Zuhoor Al-Mansouri – Renal Pathology
Zuhoor is a mother of three as well as a Saudi Arabian board certified pathologist. She went to medical school in King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Alina Bocicariu – Breast Pathology
Alina obtained her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, Romania – followed by an AP residency at the same institution. She practiced as a staff pathologist in Romania for two years, and then moved to Canada, where she recently completed an AP residency at Queen’s University.
Michael Cabanero – Thoracic Pathology
Dr. Michael Cabanero obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School, followed by residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, New York. His clinical and research interests focus on the pathogenesis, molecular signature, and prognoses of cancer. Under the supervision of Dr. Ming Tsao, he is pursuing a clinical research fellowship at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre where he is investigating tumor heterogeneity in non-small cell lung cancer to better understand the process of cancer evolution as it applies to targeted therapy resistance.
Anderson Mutuiri – Renal Pathology
Anderson completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery as well as his Anatomical Pathology Master of Medicine in Kenya. Prior to coming to UHN for his Renal Pathology Fellowship, Anderson was working as a general surgical pathologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
Allison Osmond – Dermatopathology
Allison completed her BSc. and Mount Saint Vincent University, and her MSc. at Dalhousie. She then left Halifax and went home to Newfoundland to complete her MD at Memorial University, then coming to Ontario to complete her AP residency and Fellowship at Western University. Allison again went home to Newfoundland to work as a Community Pathologist for one year, and is now back on the mainland to complete her dermatopathology fellowship with Drs. Ghazarian & Habeeb.
Deepti Ravi – Molecular Oncology
Dr. Ravi graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) with honours medical degree of MBBChBAO along with Licentiates in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics from the RCSI & Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Following this she graduated from the General Pathology residency program at McMaster University with FRCPC in June, 2017. She received the prestigious 40 under 40 ASCP award for contributions to Lab Medicine at the age of 25 making her the youngest Canadian to have received this award till date. Under the supervision of Dr. Tsao, Dr. Liu and Dr. Cutz she is pursuing a research fellowship in Applied Molecular Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Center with her research interest focussing on GI & Pancreatic Pathology.
Jason Wasserman – Head and Neck Pathology
Jason completed his medical degree and residency in anatomical pathology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital. He’s also completed a PhD at the University of Toronto and is currently pursuing a head and neck pathology fellowship under the supervision of Drs. Weinreb and Perez-Ordonez.
