This week, Martin Grealish, pathologist assistant, surgical pathology was ‘infected’ by the LMP Q&A BUG. The nomination came from last week’s Q&A BUG ‘victim,’ Roger Boyle. Check out Roger’s photo Q&A, HERE.
As a pathologist assistant, Martin performs quality specimen handling and grossing on diseased or abnormal tissue samples. Him and other pathologist assistants work as a team with medical laboratory technologists and technicians to provide LMP pathologists with the best possible samples to make accurate diagnoses.
Martin will receive tissue specimens direct from UHN operating rooms and various external clinics that need to be dissected and documented. He will dictate characteristics of the specimen throughout the dissection process, which is recorded and translated to text. The specimen samples Martin receives can vary greatly throughout any given day, and range from diagnostics biopsy samples to whole multi-organ exenteration. The pathologist assistants in LMP handle and process some of the most complex specimen types in pathology, including vertebral tumours, liver, and various other transplant specimens. They work to identify the characteristics and unknowns of whole patients specimens, and give pathologists the necessary tissue samples to make accurate diagnoses.
To learn a little more on the personal side of Martin, check out his photo Q&A below. Make sure to read to the end to find out who’s next to be ‘infected’ by the LMP Q&A BUG. It could be you!
Whereabouts do you live and how do you commute to work?
What was your first job?
Favourite meal to make at home?
Favourite TV show?
What do you do for fun?
If you could be famous for one thing, what would it be?
How would you describe your ideal vacation?
What’s your favourite animal? (Draw it!)
If you could bring one item to a deserted island, what would it be?
What’s on your iPod?
Favourite sports teams?
If you had to describe LMP in three words, what would they be?
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
(The repitition is purposeful!)
Because Martin completed the photo series Q&A he was given the opportunity to pass the bug onto someone else… It’s now with great pleasure we announce the next staff member to be ‘infected’ by the LMP Q&A BUG:
Maria Amenta, Manager, Specimen Management

This is great! Definitely reflective of Martin.
